Ted Lilly took the mound for the Cubs on Friday night at Dodger Stadium. Scouts from both leagues watched Lilly go out and give up 7 runs in 32/3 innings as the Cubs fell behind the Dodgers 3-1 in the second inning. The Cubs staged a ninth-inning rally but still came up short 9-7.

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said Friday he doesn’t envision the Cubs ever “going young” and not approaching each season as a contending team.
The Cubs were looking to keep a couple of streaks going Thursday night at Dodger Stadium. They took a three-game winning streak into Los Angeles after sweeping three games against the Diamondbacks in Arizona.

Now it gets interesting. With the top available pitcher now off the trade market with Seattle’s
trade of Cliff Lee to Texas, the Cubs are expected to be targeted more
aggressively, at least by teams seeking pitchers, with Friday night’s
starter Ted Lilly among the best remaining starters among teams willing
to move players.
LOS ANGELES — Ted Lilly didn’t do much for his trade value Friday night, and a rare seven-run output by the lineup couldn’t do enough to help Lilly and the Cubs’ win total.
LOS ANGELES — More than halfway through the season, the Cubs are still looking for that right-handed setup man they hoped they had in Esmailin Caridad, and then Carlos Zambrano, and then Andrew Cashner.
Even those who support Cubs GM Jim Hendry, and I am not one of them, point to his record trading for players to help the club.
